Misokatsu Yabaton Review: Is Nagoya’s Most Famous Pork Cutlet Worth It?

Arrived in Nagoya way too early to check in. Dumped the luggage at the hotel and went hunting for lunch. Misokatsu Yabaton kept popping up on every Nagoya must-eat list, so off we went to their Esca Underground Mall outlet, right by the Shinkansen side of Nagoya Station. Spoiler: it lived up to the hype.

Meet the mascot.

What Makes Misokatsu Yabaton Special?

Misokatsu is pork cutlet drenched in miso sauce. But Yabaton doesn’t use just any miso. They use Red Soybean Miso, a Nagoya original. It’s the real deal, and you can taste the heritage in every bite.

How the Queue Works

The queue moves fast and smart. Here’s the drill:

  • Staff take your order while you’re still standing in line
  • Ask for the English menu—they’ll hand it over without fuss
  • Once seated, green tea, chopsticks and a wet towel are already waiting
  • No lingering. This is eat-and-go territory

They even branded the ceiling lights. Commitment.

Packed on a weekday lunch. The turnover is fast — orders taken in the queue, food out quickly, no dawdling.

What We Ordered at Misokatsu Yabaton

Misokatsu Yabaton - Waraji Tonkatsu

Waraji Tonkatsu Set (¥2,000)

Best of both worlds, please. This jumbo pork fillet cutlet comes half miso, half tonkatsu sauce. The tonkatsu side arrived already sauced. For the miso half, the staff pours it tableside—a nice little theatre moment.

The fillet is a leaner cut but still tender, not dry. Portion is massive. Comes with rice, miso soup and a side of lotus root.

I worried the miso would be too overwhelming. It wasn’t. Sweet, savoury, earthy and slightly smoky—almost like a Japanese BBQ sauce. The tonkatsu sauce is sharper, with a tang that cuts through the fried richness. Two very different vibes, both delicious.

Misokatsu Yabaton - Teppan Tonkatsu

Teppan Tonkatsu Set (¥2,000)

Pork loin cutlet served sizzling on a hot plate over shredded cabbage. Again, the miso sauce gets poured at your table. They even hand you a bib to protect your clothes from splatter. Thoughtful touch.

The loin is thicker than the fillet, with more bounce. Not overcooked—the inside still had a pinkish hue. Crispy outside, juicy inside, zero porky funk. Freshly fried upon order, and somehow not greasy at all.

Don’t Forget the Condiments

Every table has a little spread you can help yourself to:

  • Pickled radish
  • Mustard
  • Ground sesame
  • Chilli powder

Mix and match to your heart’s content.

Verdict on Misokatsu Yabaton

Both sets were equally banging. Total comfort food. Maybe my hunger amplified the joy, but honestly, I’d eat either again in a heartbeat.
