Nakhon Kitchen – The best neighbourhood gem in Singapore that offers cheap & good Thai food

Nakhon Kitchen @ Ang Mo Kio Ave 10

I had only just hopped onto the Nakhon Kitchen bandwagon last year. Probably still a few years too late but nonetheless I’m very glad that there is a NK branch near where I live so whenever I’m craving for food from the Land of Smiles, this is the place to go. And I’m sure many wouldn’t disagree that Nakhon Kitchen is possibly the best neighbourhood gem that offers cheap and good Thai eats in the heartlands.

All these dishes for just 2 of us and it was <$40 ($36 to be exact with no GST or service charge) for this sumptuous feast. If you go to a fancy Thai restaurant for the same, expect to pay double or more plus taxes. Why spend more when you can spend less for the same (good) food. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyway I didn’t even realise I had way ordered too much until everything arrived on the table. Oops, lol.

The Homemade Thai Fish Cakes (S$6 for 4 pieces) were absolutely delicious whether eaten on their own or paired with the sweet chilli sauce dip. Tender, springy, packed full of flavour and not greasy at all – we love!

The Thai Vermicelli Salad with Seafood (S$6) was refreshing – we could taste the savouriness of fish sauce and tanginess of lime juice in the dressing – it was an explosion of flavours in the mouth but with harmony. The minced chicken, seafood, tomato wedges and julienned green mango/carrot offered contrasting textures too.

Note you really need to toss everything thoroughly, otherwise the vermicelli at the top would taste quite bland.

The Deep Fried Boneless Chicken Wings (S$4 for 2 pieces) were fried to perfection – crispy and crunchy – without being too oily.

The inside filling was somewhat floury and pasty and not as meaty as I expected it to be. Despite that, it was still well seasoned and tasty with some crunch from diced carrots and possibly water chestnuts.

The Deep Fried Chicken with Garlic (S$6) was a little lacklustre as the chicken pieces weren’t crispy enough and there weren’t a lot of garlic bits too which would have intensified the garlicky flavour of the dish.ย I was supposed to order the pork equivalent of this as we already had two other chicken dishes – my bad. Next time then!

The Green Curry Chicken (S$8) was thick, creamy and flavoursome. We had to order white rice (S$1 per portion) so we could douse the sauce over the rice. There was also a generous serving of chicken meat (leg and thigh part) and egg plant in it – both equally tender.

As expected, we couldn’t finish all the food so we had this and half of the vermicelli salad packed to go.

The Phad Thai Noodles ($5) wasn’t the best I had (I thought the one from Thai Express was excellent) because it was predominantly sweet – in fact too sweet for my liking and the other flavours didn’t come through as much. And it could do with a bit more toppings too – overall it was just plain and ordinary.

We left with happy tummies and of course without breaking the bank. Dishes were pretty authentic and tasted above average overall. Food was served up quickly and service was also prompt. Our glasses were regularly topped up with iced water. Don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t be back. Highly recommended!
