Penang Delights Prawn Mee & Lor Mee @ S11, Ang Mo Kio Central

Penang Delights was voted as one of the top prawn noodle stalls in Singapore by Channel U viewers. Indeed, it is also one of my two favourite places to go to for a tasty bowl of prawn noodles besides Whitley Road Big Prawn Mee.

This stall is located at the S11 Food Court (in front of Jubilee Square) and just beside the popular Rasa Sayang Western Food Stall.

Though I was here over the weekend during peak lunch hour, the queue was relatively short but almost every table in that section of the food court had traces of their prawn mee. Anyway, long queue doesn’t equate to good food. Short queue doesn’t mean it’s bad food either. For Penang Delights, it just means serving good food in the fastest time possible.

Penang Prawn Mee $3.50

When I was standing by the stall while waiting for my order, I saw this delightful pot of prawn broth that was really frothy on the top. The smell of fried prawn heads and shells that went into the soup was just so fragrant. When I took a spoonful of the soup, it was indeed as aromatic as I expected it to be. Concentrated and full of flavour but not fishy at all. There were also full size prawns with heads intact (so you can suck the juices), lean pork slices, fish cake slices, bean sprouts and kangkong. I also liked the texture of the noodles that was cooked just right, firm and springy.

Penang Lor Mee $3.00

We also ordered their Penang Lor Mee which was made of prawn broth too. But unfortunately I couldn’t taste much of the prawn flavour in it because the gravy was a tad too sour (even though I only added a dash of black vinegar and it wasn’t my favourite Chin Kiang vinegar) to be able to taste anything else in the bowl. Plus I found the yellow noodles a little overcooked and soft to my liking. I’m not sure what’s the difference in taste between Penang lor mee and local lor mee because both were really similar so despite it being an authentic Penang delight, it had no distinctive feature to rave about. Pity.

Only merit of this lor mee was the generous portion of ingredients in it. They actually gave one whole braised egg (instead of half like some other lor mee stalls) on top of the braised pork, fish cake and vegetables.

I certainly prefer the prawn mee to the lor mee here. I rate the prawn mee a 8/10!
