We swung by Scarlett Supermarket at Djitsun Mall in Ang Mo Kio recently and stumbled upon the Haidilao Self-Heating Braised Pork Rice (海底捞自热卤肉饭). Having enjoyed the hotpot version before, we decided to give this one a shot.

Easy as pie, really! Just have some room temperature water ready. The self-heating happens pretty quickly. Wait for about 15 minutes, and then you can dig in.
The rice turned out surprisingly fluffy and well-cooked—just the way I like it, not too firm or mushy. The braised meat sauce leaned a bit on the salty side, but the meat was tender, and there were these tiny potato cubes adding a nice touch. Overall, it was tastier than expected.
It’s the kind of meal you can easily pack for a casual picnic at the park or by the beach. Quick to prepare, all you need is some drinking water. Simple and satisfying.
