The husband and I were doing some shopping at Wisma Atria when suddenly he just recalled this Instagram picture that I showed him the other day – it was a post from a fellow blogger who was recommending this new Japanese stall at Wisma Atria’s Food Republic that served up a humongous portion of curry rice. Of course, the foodie duo had to go check it out ๐Ÿ˜‰

While Udon Goen specialises in udon noodles, it serves up ramen and Japanese curry rice too. It’s very much a true blue Japanese establishment as the chefs and crew were all warm and friendly Japanese people ๐Ÿ™‚ Service was very swift too.

Here’s a glimpse of their menu:

We went for the Japanese Chicken Katsu Original Curry Rice (S$6.80) each and were just awestruck that the chicken cutlet could be so gigantic. I was asking the husband if they accidentally left out a ‘1’ in front of the $6.80 (as that’s about the normal price in other Japanese restaurants) because the price of this curry rice was just too good to be true.

To have a better idea of just how big that chicken cutlet was, we placed a $2 bill next to the plates ๐Ÿ™‚

The curry rice was one of the best I had tried. The curry gravy with bits of tender potato was rich, thick and robust tasting without being overly salty. Apparently, they used tonkotsu (pork bone) broth to make the gravy hence it was more flavoursome than most other similar curries. Though the gravy filled up half of the plate and seemed to be a lot, I actually polished it off before I could finish the rice because it was that good.

The chicken katsu was a real treat. Chicken dark meat was used and it was moist, juicy and tender on the inside while the outside was coated with panko breadcrumbs and then fried to a perfect golden brown colour. When you bit into the cutlet, you could still get that resounding crunch. It was fresh with no rancid oil taste. Just awesome!

Step aside Monster Curry, Shihlin and Hot Star, this XXXXL fried chicken wins hands down! ๐Ÿ™‚

Will I be back? Goes without saying! Where else can we get such a comforting and gratifying meal at such an incredible price? Peeps, this is not to be missed! Quickly go now before it gets too busy (and the price goes up), lol.
